Maybelline Acid Wash - Ripped Tide Swatch
Hi everyone!
I have a little swatch for you today! The Maybelline Acid Wash collection came out a few months ago, but it was only last month that these polishes finally arrived in my local polish store - ugh. I had to wait for ages to get my hands on one, and can you believe it now, I actually don't like them after swatching them.
I picked up Ripped Tide because that was the colour that spoke the most to me, and I had seen some great swatches of it (for example by The Nailasaurus). Ripped Tide is a bright turquoise/blue jelly with white glitters in it in various sizes. I used three coats for my swatches, but ugh. This looks so chunky...
I did this swatch a while ago and took the polish off after that because I didn't like it. I sadly can't remember what top coat I used, but I think it was my Gel Like Top Coat from Only You.
The colour of the polish is really nice, and I got the glitters out just fine. The glitters didn't drag (a lot), but I still don't like the overall look. For me, this looks too thick (unfortunately not the good "jum jelly" or "jum glass top coat" kind of thick) and chunky. It's not the consistency of the polish itself that is too thick because that was fine, but it's just the entire thing with the big glitters.
It looks great on other people's nails though (or on most people's nails anyway), so I'm not sure what went wrong with me. Maybe my nails are a bit curvier so the glitter wont lie flat? I haven't had this problem with other glitter polishes though.
How do you feel about this polish? Have you tried any of the Acid Wash Maybellines? Maybe I could try layering one coat on top of a white base coat to lessen the chunkyness?
Anyway, a little public service announcement for you all too: I'm currently starting a new year at University, after finishing my master's degree in Literature and Linguistics. I'm doing Journalism now, which is really interesting and fun, BUT also a lot of work. Which is why I haven't posted yet this week or visited your blogs a lot... I'll be posting as often as possible and there will be times when twice a week is no problem, but just so you now, it could also happen that I vanish for a week because I'm buried in work ;)
Thanks for reading!

This looks nice :-) I was never sure about buying these and now I am sure! They have stopped selling them! Oh well!
ReplyDeleteYou think so? Well I'm glad one of us likes it :p I'm bummed about looking forward to it and then not liking it though, so I'm going to try something different when applying it and I hope I'll love it more then!
DeleteOh, that's really a pity! :( I also thought to buy one, but it's a good thing that I didn't.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it looks better on you though! My nails are quite long so I needed three coats - it might look better on shorter nails with two coats?
DeleteI wanted to have this one, but I didn't feel the pressure because of removing this type of a nail polish. The biggest glitters look rough indeed but it's a pretty blue :)
ReplyDeletePretty blue indeed!
DeleteI haven't tried this line in particular, but I've never liked the Maybelline color show polishes. Something about the formula ends up streaky and messy and ugh. The only saving grace is that they do look good after top coat.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, I think I understand what you mean xD
This polish does look awesome. At least there's that!
Hehe :) I haven't had much trouble with Maybelline before, it's just this one that I don't like unfortunately :/
DeleteI was looking for this polish and I couldn't find it here. Looks really nice Robin :)
ReplyDeleteIt only appeared here months after its original release too so I was looking all over for it for so long :)
Deleteoh man, I totally hate this polish!! I got this one too after I saw some swatches, but I totally regretted it. its messy and chunky and ugh... I gave it away to a co-worker the next day!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I'm so glad you say that!! I thought I was just about the only one who didn't like it! I'm going to keep it and see if I can make it work for me somehow, but yeah :/
DeleteI think it looks lovely on your nails but we're all bound to dislike a nail polish at some point aren't we lol. Good luck with your journalism course, it sounds really interesting :D xx
ReplyDeleteI guess we are! It'd be odd if we liked every polish on the planet (and really bad for our wallet too lol). Thanks Emily! It's really interesting and fun, but a lot of work too! :)
DeleteI'm sure all the hard work will be worth it in the end though :D !
DeleteBy the way, I have just done a Liebster Award post and you are one of the bloggers I have nominated, you can find your questions on my blog if you'd like to take part :D it's okay if you haven't got the time though of course, I know you're probably busy with your new course xxx
Oh thanks Emily, that's so nice of you! I've been nominated a few times for the Liebster Award and I've always been putting it off to make a post about it (shame on me), but I will add your questions in the big Liebster post too! :D
DeleteI love this polish! And yes it is chuncky, Didn't like it at first as well and had the same thoughts you had (looks better on others, how do they do it?) Well, I strated to LOVE this polish with a gel look topcoat. It makes the surface flat and so it looks less chunky.
ReplyDeleteEn waarom zet ik dit alles in Engels neer... Hmmz ok. hahahahahaha mooie swatches!!
Hmm gel look top coat is a good idea! I'll try that! Haha ja ik las je comment en dacht ook "huh Miriam in het Engels?!" :D
DeleteIt looks nice! I have one nail polish from this collection and I also have mixed feelings about it :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear I'm not the only one :) I'm going to try it again sometime and see if my opinion about it has changed :)
